Creighton Memorial, Carlisle

The Creighton Memorial is located in Hardwicke Circus in Carlisle. This memorial was erected in 1898 in honour of J.R. Creighton, Alderman and twice Mayor of Carlisle. The memorial, originally located on the south-eastern end of Eden Bridge, was unveiled on the 8th October 1898 in a service addressed by the Mayor, the Speaker of the House of Commons (MP for Carlisle) and Creighton’s brother, the Bishop of London. In 1970 the memorial was taken down to facilitate the construction of the Carlisle Ring Road and the Hardwicke Circus roundabout, which contains a sunken garden, in which the monument was re-erected in 1971, just a few metres from its original position. The monument is Grade II listed on the National Heritage Loist for England.

James Robert Creighton (1844–1896) was Mayor of Carlisle (from 1880–1881 and again from 1888–1889). He was a member of Carlisle Council for 22 years and was responsible for several developments in the city, including the new Market Hall (1889), Tullie House Library and Museum (1893) and the Lowther Street improvement Scheme (1895-1896).[1]
