The Creighton Memorial, Hardwicke Circus

  • Description

"In honour of James Robert Creighton, twice mayor of Carlisle, who died in 1896. He was a council member for 22 years and initiated many improvements in the city, including the Market Hall, Tullie House Library and Museum, and a new road layout linking Lowther Street to Eden Bridge. The memorial was erected in 1898 in a triangular garden at street level, which occupied roughly the same area as today's sunken garden in the middle of Hardwicke Circus roundabout. While the latter was being constructed in 1970 the monument was removed, but was put back the next year in almost the same spot it had originally been. A statue of St George and the dragon is set on a tall column supported by a triangular plinth. There are carved inscriptions on two panels at the base, the third bears a portrait plaque - see [[3611907]] . Detailed information about the man and the memorial is given in the English Heritage listing description http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1408781 . More about JR Creighton in this Cumberland News article http://www.cumberlandnews.co.uk/x_marks_the_birthplace_of_two_famous_brothers_1_542166?referrerPath=home ."
