Consett Iron and Steel Works (1840-1980)

Consett Steel WorksDerwent Iron Company in Consett was founded in 1840 by Jonathan to quarry and smelt ironstone. After the best local ironstone was depleted the Stockton and Darlington Railway and other local railways were extended to transport ironstone from Cleveland to the works. In 1857 a new company, Derwent & Consett Iron Company Ltd, took over the works. Later, the Consett Iron Company (incorporated 1864) was nationalised in 1951 and became part of British Steel in 1967, and renamed as Consett Steel Works. At its peak in the 1960s Consett steel works provided jobs for 6,000. British Steel Consett Works was closed on 12th September 1980, with the loss of over 4,000 jobs, causing a 35% unemployment rate in Consett at that time. There are few traces of the steel works left, but the Terra Novalis sculpture by Tony Cragg made with steel from the site, is visible from the C2C cycle route near Consett, celebrating the town's past steel industry.
