Church of St Paul

St Paul's Church is located on Church Bank in Jarrow. The Parish Church, formerly two separate churches, was part of the monastery of St Paul, founded AD 681-2 with gift by King Ecgfrith to Benedict Biscop, Abbot of Wearmouth. The original eastern Saxon church is now the chancel of the present church. A dedication stone (AD 685) of the basilica was resited in the nave over the arch to the tower. the church tower is Norman, but thought to incorporate Saxon fabric. Parts of the church were rebuilt in 1782 and in 1866 a north aisle and north porch by George Gilbert Scott were added.[1] The church was restored in 1972. St Paul's Church is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
