Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Stannington

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin is located on Church Road in Stannington, Northumberland. There has been a church on this site since at least 1190 AD, though a Saxon gravestone found here suggests even earlier. The church was largely rebuilt in 1870-1871, after the medieval church had fallen into disrepair. It was rebuilt in an Early English style, designed by R.J. Johnson (1832-1892), and part funded by 4th Baronet Ridley. The new church retained the Norman arch and 2 pillars from the earlier building. The church is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The Lych Gate to the church is seperately listed.
