Church of St Mary of Furness, Barrow

The Church of St Mary of Furness is located on Duke Street in Barrow-in-Furness. This Catholic church was built 1866-1867, designed in a Neo-Gothic style, by Edward Welby Pugin. The church opened for worship on the 28th August 1867 and was the first Catholic Church built in the Borough of Furness. The site was gifted by the Duke of Devonshire, to help meet the rapidly growing population of Barrow, which included a significant number of Irish immigrants in the mid 19th century.  The church tower and spire was added in 1888. The sacristy and confessionals in 1894. The church is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England. The Presbytery, connected to the church, by J. Byrne of Liverpool, was added in the late 19th century, and is also a Grade II listed building.
