Church of St Helen, St Helen Auckland

St Helen's ChurchSt Helen's Church is located on Manor Road in St Helen Auckland. It is the parish chuch of West Auckland, St Helen Auckland and Tindale Crescent. The church dates from the late 12th century. The oldest surviving part of the church are the two eastern bays of the nave, which were built in 1120. The present low-pitched roof was built in the 15th century. The clerestory and battlements were built in the 16th century. The original door to the church remains, making it "one of the oldest doors in England". The church is a Grade I listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
"The siting of the church here, rather than in the larger settlement of West Auckland is curious, particularly since the parish used to extend, prior to 1832, much further westwards than it does today. A possible reason is the Christianisation of a pagan sacred place. Early St. Helen dedications are thought by some, to be connected with the Celtic water-goddess Elin - witness to many St. Helen's springs and wells." (CofE, achurchnearyou.com)
