Castletown House

The Castletown Estate and farm is located on the north banks of the River Eden about ½ mile west of the village of Rockcliffe in Cumbria. Castletown house here, situated in parkland, was built in 1811 by the distinguished architect Peter Nicholson, who also remodelled Corby Castle. Castletown is a Grade II* listed building on the National Heritage List for England. The gate piers and the entrance lodge to Castletown are Grade II listed.

Historically the manor of Rockcliffe was held under barony of Burgh by the Rockcliffe (‘Routheclive’) family, until 1205. After a series of different owners, in 1682 Rockcliffe Castle and demesnes were sold to Rev. Charles Usher in 1682, who demolished the castle and built a new house (replaced by the 'Old Hall' in 1730). Later the estate was sold to Robert Mounsey, a Carlisle lawyer, for whome Castletown house was built from 1809-11.[1] The estate remains under the ownership of the Mounsey-Heyshams family.[2]
