C. Hodgson Fowler (1840 - 1910)


Charles Hodgson Fowler was a prolific architect who specialised in building and restoring churches, mostly in County Durham, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. After an apprenticeship with Sir George Gilbert Scott, he worked in Pimlico, London, and in 1863 became an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In 1864, he moved to Durham, working as Clerk of Works at Durham Cathedral. In 1870 he became a Fellow of the RIBA. From 1885 to the time of his death in 1910, Hodgson Fowler was Architect to the Dean and Chapter of Durham.
