Bitts Park
Bitts Park in Carlisle is located east and north of Carlisle Castle, by the River Eden, near its confluence with the River Caldew. It was the first public park to be established in Carlisle. Some of the paths date back to 1818, and were built by unemployed weavers to form a riverside walkway beside the River Eden. The park itself opened in 1893, established on the site of a former rubbish tip, and initially called the Peoples Park. It was later extended and renamed The Bitts (the 'Bitts' were small parcels of land which were used for grazing in Medieval times).[1] The western part of the park includes low lying land known as 'The Sauceries' (local tradition indicates that the name relates to the land here belonging to the man who made the king’s sauces!). Hadrain's Wall National Trail runs along the riverside boundary of the park.
