Bearpark
Bearpark is a village in County Durham, located about 2½ miles west of Durham, and a short distance to the north of Ushaw Moor. To the north of the village lies the ruins of Beaurepaire Manor House, built in 1258 by the Prior of Durham. The village name derives from this; the French term "Beau Repaire", meaning "beautiful retreat", over time became pronouced as "Bearpark". Aldin Grange Bridge over the River Browney dates from the 15th century. The settlement grew rapidly after Bearpark Colliery was opened in 1872. St Edmund's Church was built soon after, in 1879. The village and surrounding area form Bearpark Civil Parish, which was created in 1894 (prior to that, the area had been part of Evlet Civil Parish). The former miners' welfare hall (built 1921) was for many years Bearpark Community Centre. Bearpark Civil Parish had a population of 2,019 at the time of the 2021 Census.
