Close, No. 32 (The Cooperage)
No. 32, Close is the most complete timber-framed building from the late medieval period in Newcastle, lucky to survive the Great Fire of 1854. It was originally built in the 15th century as a merchant's house. It was later converted for commercial use including a grocers and coopers (barrel-maker's). It became a public house in 1974, known as The Cooperage. The pub ceased trading in 2005, and the building was purchased by Apartment Group in 2009. The building is Grade II* listed on the National Heritage List for England. It was added to the Heritage at Risk register in 2017. The lower end of the Long Stairs is next to the building.
