Willowford Roman Bridge
Willowford Bridge was built by the Romans to carry Hadrian's Wall over the River Irthing. It had multiple phases of construction, evolving from a narrow stone bridge with towers, to a wider structure supporting a military road, featuring massive abutments, sluices - providing an impressive example of Roman engineering. Significant remains of the stone foundations/abutments and tower bases are visible today in Wall Mile 48.
