Wheelbirks Furnace

By the west banks of Stocksfield Burn, about half mile south-east of the farm at Wheelbirks, are the remains of a disused blast furnace which date from the 16th or 17th century. The furnace consists of a small, oval chamber, with an open side to the north and with two flanking stone walls. The remains of the furnace are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. As an important early industrial site, is also a Scheduled Monument (covering two areas).
