Okana (Union Rooms)
Okana. The former Union Club on Westgate Road was designed in a 'French chateau' style in 1877 by architect, M. P. Manning. It is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. Despite its close proximity to Central Station the building had been empty and derelict for over 20 years, before being restored with funding assistance from the Grainger Town Project. The JD Wetherspoon chain of pub/restaurants restored the building and it re-opened as The Union Rooms in 1999. The restoration, costing £4.2m, largely followed the original design, including the grand stone staircase, 15 ft stained glass window, huge glass dome, large rooms with ornate plasterwork, fireplaces, etc. JD Wetherspoon sold the Union Rooms as a going concern in 2017.[1] It now operates as Okana.
