  • Description

Type : Photograph Medium : Print-black-and-white Description : A black-and-white photograph of Tuthill Stairs Newcastle upon Tyne taken in 1885. The photograph shows the upper storeys of timber-framed houses on both sides of Tuthill Stairs looking down towards the Quayside. Opposite the foot of Tuthill Stairs is a timber yard in the grounds of the old Mansion House the remains of which can be seen in the centre background of the photograph. The photograph shows the upper floors of the houses along Tuthill Stairs. The buildings on the right-hand side are timber-framed although only a small area of the timbers can be seen on the outside. The houses on both sides of the stairs have pantile roofs. The buildings on the right-hand side of the picture appear to be in a state of disrepair. The render has partly fallen off some window panes and pantiles appear to be broken or missing. In the background is the Mansion House a brick building with a turret which was built in 1691 by the Town and was used until 1865. It was then used as a timber yard until it was destroyed by fire in 1895.
