The Swirle

The Swirle is a lane in Newcastle, leading from Sandgate to the Quayside. The Half Moon tavern stood on The Swirle in the 1890s. The street's name was derived from the word 'swirle' meaning the meandering of a stream of water. A small stream, long since culverted (covered) entres the River Tyne here. The old street is remembered in the public sculpture: 'The Swirl Pavilion'. The layout of Sandgate changed when the street was redeveloped in the 1990s, including a modern lane named The Swirle, as a connection to the past.
