The Mile Castle, Newcastle

Nos. 19-25, Grainger Street, on the junction with Westgate Road, in Newcastle, is a J D Wetherspoon pub and hotel. The building was originally a bank, built 1862-1863 in a Classical style, by architect John Edward Watson, for the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Savings Bank. The building subsequently became the headquarters of the Northumberland and Durham Savings Bank. Later the Trustee Savings Bank. After the bank closed, the building became a Sports Cafe Bar in 2002. It was purchased by Wetherspoons in 2009, originally called Lloyds No 1 bar. It was later renamed The Mile Castle, after the nearby site of the mile castle on Wall Mile 4 of Hadrian's Wall, of which the remains are located beneath the nearby Newcastle Arts Centre. Following an extensive £5 million redevelopment, a new roof terrace, beer garden and 26 bedroom hotel was opened on 26th November, 2024. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
