The Arches

The Arches, which form a gateway from King's Road into the Quadrangle, are an iconic symbol of Newcastle University. The 3 storey building with its pair of arches were built in 1911, designed by W. H. Knowles, for Armstrong College, a predecessor of the University.[1] There is a statue of King Edward VII recessed in a niche, above the Arches. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. In 2011 the Museum of Antiquities (a 1950s building) which adjoined the Arches, was demolished to create more open space. At the Newcastle University campus in Malaysia, the Bell's Court building includes a section designed to look like the Arches in Newcastle.
