The Ancient Unicorn, Bowes

The Ancient Unicorn is located on The Street in Bowes. The front block dates from the mid-18th century, and there is an altered and refronted 17th century rear wing. It is a former coaching inn, and later a hotel, bar, and restaurant. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritge List for England.

Sadly, The Ancient Unicorn closed at the end of November 2025. At that time, the property was for sale by Christies & co., noting "The inn comprises a bar and restaurant serving 50 covers, a 14-bedroom hotel, and a village shop. It is also a licensed wedding venue, having regularly hosted events and celebrations. Outside, there is an attractive landscaped courtyard which offers outdoor seating."
