Swarth Gill, Garsdale

Swarthgill (aka Swarth Gill) is a large house on Hawes Road (A684) in Garsdale, located about 4½ miles east of Sedbergh and a similar distance west of Garsdale Head. It was originally a farmhouse with an attached cottage, now all one house. The house probably dates from the late 17th century. It was enlarged in the early 18th century (dated 1712 on the porch and on internal spice cupboard). It was once the home of John Haygarth (1677-1757) and his wife Isabell. Swarthgill is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England. To the north-east of the house is a former Threshing barn with hay loft and shippon, which dates from the early 18th Century, which is also a Grade II listed building.
