Stanwix
Stanwix is a suburb of Carlisle, located north of the River Eden and about ½ mile north east of the city centre. Historically, Stanwix was a separate village, township and head of the ancient parish of Stanwix. The village of Stanwix and parish was centred on the St Michae's Church. In 1866, Stanwix became a civil parish. Then in 1912, part of the civil parish of Stanwix, including the village, became part of the parish, city and Municipal Borough of Carlisle. The remaining part of the civil parish was later renamed Stanwix Rural. Stanwix is built on the site of a Roman fort known as Uxelodunum, on Hadrian’s Wall. St Michael’s Church stands on part of the site of the former Roman fort, situated at the top of a steep bank rising from the river Eden. This ancient history is reflected in the place name 'Stanwix', which means 'stone walls'.
