St Nicholas Arms, London Road, Carlisle
St Nicholas Arms is a public house located on London Road, by the junction with Grey Street, in Carlisle. Originally a large house, (shown on the 1842 Map of Carlisle), it was opened as a pub in 1921, by the Carlisle and District State Management Scheme. The new establishment was planned by the Management Scheme to reduce problems of overcrowding in the pubs at the lower end of Botchergate. A petition signed by 900 local residents in the area objected to the plans, but St Nicholas Arms opened in 1921 and has remainded a public house ever since. St Nicholas Arms is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
