St Helen's Church (formerly of Eston)
St Helens Church in Eston originated in the 12th Century and was in use as a church until 1962 and was a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England. It is rumoured that the church was founded on a Roman garrison chapel site. The church suffered an arson attack in 1987 and a fire in 1992, it was left in a critical state of disrepair. In 1998 the remains of the church were removed to Beamish Museum, where reconstruction of the church began in 2011. A memorial service for Beamish’s founder Dr Frank Atkinson CBE was held in the church in 2015. The church was opened to the public by the Bishop of Durham on the 12th November 2015. Little remains on the former site at Eston, except a plaque and the outline of the church's foundations.
