Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is a Protestant Christian church and an international charitable organisation. It was originally founded by William and Catherine Booth in 1865 as the East London Christian Mission. The movement was renamed The Salvation Army in 1878, adopting a quasi-military structure, with a uniform and officers. As well as its evangelical spiritual mission, volunteers from the Salvation Army provide shelter and services for people in crisis. The organisation grew rapidly throughout the 19th century and today, operates in over 130 countries.
