Scotsgate

Town Walls

  • Description

"The street that passes through the gate is Castlegate. The gate is Elizabethan but altered in the 19th century. Listed, grade I, the gate is also a scheduled Ancient Monument. It is hard to imagine that this was once part of the A1 road, the Great North Road, the highway between London and Edinburgh."
