Wall Mile 20

  • Description

For a short distance west of Halton Shields, the Military Road swings off the line of the curtain wall and onto that of the ditch, in order to avoid the existing hamlet of Halton Shields. The original 1749 survey for the road indicated that it should pass to the south here, following the Vallum, rather than the curtain wall. Looking E Handbook pp.176-7.
