"These are extraction pits for clays shown in early mapping of the area. The southeast of Northumberland had a number of surface and below-ground clay exploitation. Here the working was near the ground surface and the products probably general ceramics. Elsewhere fireclays were mined as a byproduct of the reaching the coal seams to produce specialized products...." -
