St Charles' RC Church, Gosforth

St Charles' Roman Catholic Church is located by the junction of Rothwell Road and Church Road in Gosforth, Newcastle. The RC parish of St. Charles' was originally established in Coxlodge in 1861. The land on which the church now stands was donated by George Dunn Jnr. in 1896. A temporary corrugated-iron church was opened on the site on the 20th of December 1896. The foundation stone of the present church was laid by Bishop Collins on the 14th of August 1910. The 'Decorated Gothic Revival' style church, designed by Charles Menart, was opened on the 3rd of December 1911. The church includes vivid coloured stained glass windows, by Harry Clarke, an important early-C20 Irish stained glass artist and leading figure in the Irish Arts and Crafts Movement. St Charles' RC Church and it's ajoining presbytery are Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
