Ray Demesne

Ray, located north-west of Kirkwhelpington in Northumberland, was the site of a Medieval settlement, where the remains of a bastle and fishponds can still be seen near Ray Cottages. In the 19th century, Ray had become a large 10,000-acre country estate, belonging to the inventor Charles Algernon Parsons and his wife, engineer and women's rights campaigner, Katharine Parsons. The Ray estate was purchased by the 3rd Viscount Devonport's family in 1954 and remains privately owned, undergoing restoration.
