Quadrangular castle


A quadrangular castle is a highly fortified residence, constructed from stone or brick, centered around a square or rectangular courtyard. These strongholds were characterized by a defensive perimeter wall, often reinforced with corner towers and sometimes intermediate towers. Some heavily defended types utilized additional outer walls, with the entire structure commonly surrounded by dry or wet ditches.

Southern Type:
Features rounded corner and intermediate towers that project prominently from the walls.

Northern Type:
Characterized by large, square corner towers that project only slightly from the main curtain wall.
