Pittington Hallgarth Conservation Area
Pittington Hallgarth lies 3.5 miles NE of Durham at the foot of the magnesian limestone escarpment. It is located on a low but pronounced spur overlooking a vale between Pittington, Littletown and Sherburn.
The conservation area was designated in 1981. It is a small conservation area focussed on two main buildings: the Church of St Laurence and Hallgarth Manor Hotel. In addition there are a small number of houses and converted farm buildings. Consequently the main land use in the conservation area is residential.
Underlining the character of the conservation area are its roots as a manor for the Prior of Durham, from which it slowly evolved largely untouched by the mining industry in the 19th and 20th centuries....(Summary from: Pittington Hallgarth ConservationArea, December 2009)
