Old Wesleyan Chapel, Gaisgill

This former Methodist Church is located on Chapel Mews in Gaisgill. It was originally built as a Wesleyan Chapel in 1841, and the building was restored in 1895. In 1932, the Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, and United Methodist Churches joined together to become the Methodist Church of Great Britain. During the 1960s, numbers attending the chapel and its sunday school were boosted with the influx of labourers (and their children) building the nearby M6 motorway. However, following a declining congregation, the church closed, with it's last service held on the 20th July, 2003. After that, planning permission was sought to convert it for residential use.

NOTICE is hereby given that a separate building named "Wesleyan Chapel" situated at Gaisgill in the parish of Tebay in the county of Westmorland in the registration district of East Ward being a building certified according to law as a place of meeting for religious worship, was on the 12th day of June 1897, duly registered for solemnizing marriages therein, pursuant to the Act of 6th and 7th Wm. 4, c. 85.
Witness my hand this 12th day of June 1897. A. C. WHITEHEAD Superintendent Registrar.
