Newcastle Co-operative building

The former Co-operative Building at No. 117 Newgate Street, Newcastle, was built 1931-1932. The Art Deco style building was designed by L.G. Ekins (C.W.S. Architect) for the Newcastle Co-operative Society Ltd. The building has four storeys and attics, with two towers. The towers have a clock and one a barometer. The building curves round the corner of Darn Crook (now St. Andrew's Street). The Co-op had premises on Newgate Street since 1902; when this department store, with 170,000 square ft of space, opened in September 1932, it was considered a flagship store of the Cooperative movement. However, the growth of shopping on Northumberland Street, Eldon Square (opened 1976) and the Metro Centre (opened 1986), led to declining custom for Newgate Street. The sore closed in 2007, with the exception of the ground-floor Foodhall, which remained open until 2011. Following a £17 million revamp, the building became home to a Premier Inn, which opened in 2016, and a number of cafes. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
