Nether Hall, Maryport

Nether Hall (aka Netherhall) was a large country mansion, located in what is now the Netherhall area of Maryport, in Cumbria. The Hall consisted of a 14th century pele tower built largely of Roman dressed stones, mid and late Georgian additions and alterations, with further wings added in the 19th century. Humphrey Senhouse (1705-1770) inherited the Netherhall and Ellenborough estates. He married Mary Fleming, daughter and co-heir of Sir George Fleming of Rydal, in 1731. Humphrey drove the development of a new town at the small settlement and harbour at Ellenfoot, and named it 'Mary Port' after his wife. The hall was abandoned in the 1950s and was derelict by 1976, because of a serious fire. The hall was demolished in 1979, except for the pele tower. Some of its grounds survive as a public park. Nether Hall is a Grade II* listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
