Market Hall, Carlisle
The Market Hall in Carlisle is an extensive indoor market which has entrances on Fisher Steet, Scotch Street, Market Street and West Tower Street. The Market Hall was built 1887-1889 for Carlisle Corporation by Cawstone and Graham, with ironwork manufactured by Cowans, Sheldon & Co, Engineers of Carlisle. The Renaissance-style building is of red sandstone with ashlar dressings and has roofs of cast-iron and wrought-iron with glass. There were alterations to the inside of the market in 1990-1991. The Market Hall is a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England.
This market has a history pre-dating the building seen today; there was a Butcher's Market here from 1799, the market was extended in 1854 with a new Butter and Egg market, fish stalls were incorporated into the butchers' market. Further extensions to the old market were made in 1879. Behind the Fisher Street facade is the pediment and inscription for the Butter and Egg market of 1854, under which is an inscription of 2nd October 1889 for the completion and rebuilding of the market.
