Low West Allen

Low West Allen was one of the eight "grieveships" (sub-divisions) of the ancient parish of Allendale in Northumberland. It covered a wide geographical area around the River West Allen, including Ninebanks (the adjacent grieveship of High West Allen included Carrshield). Today, the area of the grievship of Low West Allen is part of West Allen Civil Parish, which was formed in 1897.

WEST ALLEN (LOW) is another grieveship, comprising the village of Ninebanks and several hamlets. West Allen was severed from the mother church and formed into a "district parish" in 1767, in conformity with an act of parliament obtained in the same year. The Church is situated at the village of Ninebanks, and its register commences in 1767. The living is a perpetual curacy in the patronage of the curate of Allendale, and incumbency of the Rev. Jonathan Scurr. Here is a school, which is open to children of every denomination. It. and the teacher's residence, were erected by subscription, aided by a grant from the Committee of Council on Education.
