Lime Kilns
There are a distinctive bank of 8 lime kilns off Newcastle Road in Fulwell, Sunderland. The kilns were built for Sir Hedworth Williamson in the 18th and 19th centuries and burnt magnesium limestone mined from the adjacent Fullwell Quarry (now landfilled).[1] Waggonways linked the kilns to docks on the River Wear. The kilns ceased operation in 1957 and are now Grade II listed.
