Lime Kilns
Lime (calcium oxide) is used in mortars and as a stabilizer in building and as a fertiliser for farming. Lime Kilns were used to heat limestone (and occasionally chalk or oyster shells) to temperatures above 900°C to produce lime. Lime has been produced in Britain since at least Roman times.[1] With the greater availability of coal, hundreds of stone limekilns were built around the UK in the early and mid 19th century. However, during the late 19th and early 20th century local small-scale kilns became increasingly unprofitable and disused as new railway networks brought cheaper lime from larger-scale producers.
