Library

The Library is located at No. 20, Bridge Street, in Blyth. The building, with its distinctive clock tower, was originally a Mechanics Institute built in a subdued High Gothic Style. It replaced an earlier Mechanic's Institute building, which from 1858 had been based in the premises of the Old Phoenix Inn (the Institute iteself was established in 1847).[1] The foundation stone for the new Mechanics Institute here, was laid by Lady Ridley on the 23rd December 1880; it was completed in 1882. It became a public library and reading room in 1930. The building is included in the 'Local List' of Non-designated Heritage Assets.

The building has a blue plaque, commemorating Aaron Walton (1886-1967), who was not only Chairman of Blyth Library, but also Mayor of Blyth 11 times and Club Presidentof Blyth Spartans. Walton lived locally on Marine Terrace and was awarded the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Blyth in 1960. (Blue Plaque, Blyth Town Council)
