Lanehead, Allendale
Lanehead (aka Lane Head) is located about 2¾ miles north-west of Allendale Town and 1 mile east of Bearsbridge. Original there was a bastle here, built in the late 16th or early 17th century.[1] Parts of this bastle are incorporated into the (former?) farmhouse here. Historically, Lane Head was part of the grieveship of Keenley in the ancient parish of Allendale. Whellan's 1855 directory for Keenly lists William and Joseph Bowman as farmers at Lane Head; (unusually) it also lists Joseph Hutchinson as farmer at Lane Head.[2] Today, Lanehead is part of Allendale Civil Parish.
