John George Swan (1839-1900)


John George Swan was born in Walker, Newcastle, in 1839. He worked for Bell Brothers, first at Newcastle and later at Middlesbrough as commercial manager. In 1864, he co-established and managed Cargo Fleet Ironworks in Middlesborough. He also had interests in Bearpark Coal and Coke Co., and the Weardale Iron and Coal Co. He was a member of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers. Swan built Upsall Hall, near Nunthorpe, as his family residence. He died in the grounds of Upsall Hall on December 23rd 1900.
