Homelands Hospital, Helmington Row

Auckland, Shildon and Willington Joint Isolation Hospital (later named Homelands Hospital) was built near Helmington Row in 1903. It was built as a fever hospital; its isolated rural location was ideal for treating people with diseases such as typhus and smallpox; preventing the spread of these diseases in densely populated towns. A tuberculosis ward was added in 1914. Later, under the NHS, the hospital was redeveloped into a general health care facility with a focus on geriatric services. The hospital closed in 2004 and the building stood derelict for many years. The hospital buildings were demolished in 2016 and the site was used for a new housing development. The entrance to Homeland court has the old stone gate piers and the date stone of 1903 is incorporated into the wall.
