Grandstand Road, Newcastle

Grandstand Road in Newcastle starts at Nun's Moor and runs across Town Moor in a north-easterly direction towards Gosforth/Kenton Road, then east to the Bluehouse Roundabout and the junction with the Great North Road. The road is 1.4 miles long in total. The name of the road relates to when there was horse racing on Town Moor. The horse racing, previously at Killingworth Moor, moved to Town Moor in 1721. Temporary stands were used until c.1800, when a permanent grandstand was built on Tow moor. The last race at the Town Moor was held in the summer of 1881, after which the races moved to Gosforth Park Racecourse. The grandstand on Town Moor was then demolished. The only building on Grandstand Road is the Blue House, located at the east end of the road, and gives its name to the Bluehouse Roundabout, which connects with the Great North Road and Jesmond Dean Road.
