The Fratry at Carlisle Cathedral is the former dining hall for the Priory of St Mary, which dates from the 15th century. It was built between 1465 and 1490. For Prior Gondibour. The building had c.1690 alterations, 1809-11 restorations by Sir Robert Smirke and 1880-81 restorations by GE Street, and repairs in the 1980s.[1] Over the centuries, the building has had varying use as a kitchen, a place of worship, an arsenal for the King’s Army, a Civil War storeroom, a chapter house, a brewery and granary, a barn and a library.[2] Today, the Fratry is an exhibition and events space, meeting point alongside the Cathedral Café.
