Former Sanderson Hospital

Sanderson Hospital on Salters Road in Gosforth was built in 1897, as a home for destitute children.[1] Later it was used by the NHS as an orthopaedic hospital and a care facility for the elderly. After the hospital was closed, the building was disused for about 15 years, before being demolished and the site redeveloped.

The WJ Sanderson Home for Destitute and Crippled Children was established in 1888, originally located in Whickham. It was founded by Newcastle philanthropist, William John Sanderson, to care for destitute children with a physical handicap who were not suitable to be housed in the workhouse. In 1889 the hospital moved larger premises at Red House in Wallsend, before finally moving to Gosforth in 1887. The Salters Road site was extended in 1914 to treat larger numbers of patients. In c.1935 it became known as the WJ Sanderson Orthopaedic Hospital and School for Children, and from c.1950 - 1964 it was renamed Sanderson Orthopaedic Hospital, and after that as the WJ Sanderson Hospital.[2]
