East Hedleyhope
East Hedleyhope (aka East Hedley Hope) is a village in County Durham, located about 7 miles west of Durham City and 7 miles north of Bishop Auckland. It is situated by the River Deerness. The village grew in association with East Hedley Hope Colliery, which opened in 1836. There were also Hedleyhope and Hedley Hill collieries nearby. The population was greater in the past, when the colliery was in operation. A British School had been built here in 1877, by the colliery owners and could accommodate up to 350 pupils.[1] The Primitive Methodists and Wesleyan Methodists held services in the school in turn. By the 1890s, a dedicated Methodist Chapel had been built at the west of the village (it was later used as a garage by a haulage firm).[2] East Hedley Hope Colliery closed in 1959. Today, East Headleyhope forms part of Hedleyhope Civil Parish. There is a village Hall in East Hedleyhope, located by the village green and play area.
