Note: Map data from Historic England c/o Open Data UK, under the Open Government Licence, imported into Google MyMaps, March 2026.

There is a Medieval moated site, located at Down Hall Farm, to the south-east of the village of Aikton in Cumbria. It consists of the earthwork remains of a medieval castle, which likely served as the manorial seat of John de Morville, one of the assassins of Thomas Becket. The castle is believed to have been destroyed by Scottish forces under Robert Bruce following the Battle of Bannockburn in the early 14th century. Part of the drawbridge was discovered in 1826 when new farm buildings were erected nearby. While the stone walls are no longer visible, the earthwork remains moat can be seen. The site is a Scheduled Monument (legal protection).
