Distington Community School

Distington Community School is located on Church Road, Distington. The primary school has about 120 children aged 3 to 11.[1] Distington Community School was established in September 2001, when it replaced Distington Infant School (on this site on Church Road, built in 1961) and Distington Junior School (on Main Street).

Distington's education history can be traced back to 1722, when a grammar school was recorded as being given by William Fletcher. A 'parochial' school was built on common land in 1754.[2] In 1878 a Board school was built on Main street at a cost of £3,000. It was a red sandstone 'm' shaped building designed to accommodate up to 300 children. This Board school on Main Street later became Distington Junior School.
