Derwentwater Memorial Cross

This carved memorial cross is located on the roadside on the A686 between Langley Castle and Haydon Bridge. The Celtic-style wheel cross was erected by Cadwallader John Bates, the historian, who purchased and restored Langley Castle in the 1890's. It commemorates James and Charles Radcliffe, the Earls of Derwentwater who were executed for their part in the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. Following the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, the lands of the 3rd Earl of Derwentwater, were confiscated and after his son died without an heir, the government gifted the estates to the Greenwich Hospital Commissioners in 1735.

In memory of James and Charles Viscounts Langley Earls of Derwentwater.
Beheaded on Tower Hill 24th February 1716 and 8th December 1746 for loyalty to their lawful sovereign.
